Passenger Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz Island, One Dead and Three Missing
A passenger boat capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, resulting in one fatality, three people missing, and 16 rescued, according to authorities. The incident occurred on a three-level pontoon boat approximately 550 meters from Alcatraz. Initially, emergency responders received reports of a fire on a vessel, but upon arrival, they found the boat had overturned instead.
The boat originally carried 19 passengers, later updated to 20. Thirteen survivors managed to reach shore on their own, while three others were hospitalized. One individual pulled from the water underwent resuscitation efforts but was later pronounced dead. The San Francisco Fire Department chief, Dean Crispin, described the scene as an active rescue operation.
The U.S. Coast Guard, fire department, and marine police launched extensive search efforts for the missing using 11 vessels, divers, and helicopters. These operations are expected to continue through Wednesday night as rescuers work to locate the three missing persons.
