Suspected Hazardous Materials Incident at the Pentagon Forces Evacuations
A suspected hazardous materials incident was reported at the Pentagon, the U.S. Defense Department headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. According to CNN, large sections of the building were shut down, several floors and corridors were locked, and employees in different areas were ordered to evacuate.
A source familiar with the details told the network that police at the scene were wearing gas masks and chemical protective gear. At the same time, firefighters in full protective suits, including gas masks, were seen rushing into the building, and a hazardous materials team was dispatched after reports of a "hazardous materials incident."
Three sources told CNN that several floors and corridors in the sprawling complex were locked down, while other areas were evacuated. Reports said activity at the site is focused on the affected area, but broad precautionary measures were taken because of the nature of the incident and the security sensitivity of the complex.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed that an "air quality issue" was identified in the building, prompting precautionary measures until its meaning is determined. "The department is conducting standard protective protocols in the affected area," he said, adding that response teams are on site to assist building employees.
Arlington County Fire Department also confirmed that its hazardous materials units are operating at the Pentagon during a "hazardous materials incident." At this stage, the source of the suspected substance has not been disclosed, and no injuries have been reported.
