Community Volunteers Stop $51,000 Scam Targeting Elderly New York Couple

A large-scale financial scam targeting an elderly couple from Monsey, New York, was thwarted last weekend thanks to the vigilance of the account holder and swift action by volunteers from the community aid organization "Chaverim" in Rockland County. The incident began on Friday when the couple's computer displayed a fake security breach alert. Shortly after, scammers posing as Microsoft technical support contacted them, falsely accusing the couple of involvement in serious crimes and threatening immediate federal arrest if they did not cooperate.

Under intense pressure, the scammers forbade the couple from ending the call or seeking outside advice and instructed them to visit their bank branch. The elderly pair transferred $51,000 to an account provided by the fraudsters. Even after returning home, the scammers continued attempting to access additional financial accounts remotely through the computer.

Suspecting fraud, the woman contacted the "Chaverim" organization. Volunteers responded quickly: one disconnected the computer from the internet to block remote access, while another rushed to the bank branch. Coordinating with bank management and staff, the volunteer stopped the payment order during processing, preventing the transfer. The full amount was returned to the couple's account, and their accounts were secured anew.
