Daniel Gad Premieres Directorial Debut Film Exploring Childhood Football Rivalry in Rehovot
Actor and singer Daniel Gad appeared on the Kan 11 news program "At Noon" on Monday to discuss his directorial debut film, "The Last Derby - Sha'arayim X Marmorek," which will air this Thursday on Kan 11. The film centers on Gad's childhood neighborhoods in Rehovot, Sha'arayim and Marmorek, and the intense football rivalry between their local teams, Maccabi Sha'arayim and Hapoel Marmorek. The story focuses on the construction of a new European-standard stadium in the city, a shared dream of both clubs that sparks mixed emotions among fans due to the potential closure or merger of the teams, challenging long-standing traditions and identities.
Gad emphasized the unique community aspect of neighborhood clubs, where players personally know the fans and share a deep connection, contrasting with the professional clubs common in Israeli football today. The film also weaves autobiographical elements, highlighting Gad's relationship with his father, Simcha Gad, a former star player for Maccabi Sha'arayim. Simcha chose loyalty to his local team over a first-league career to support the club during his mother's illness. Daniel shared that his father was deeply moved by the film, noting it was the first time a work successfully united both fan bases under one roof.
The film introduces viewers to the local slang and culture of the neighborhoods, featuring terms like "hibala" (foolish spirit) and "leshachchas" (smiling without reason). After over 15 years of telling others' stories, Gad expressed a sense of mission in finally sharing his own. Alongside the film, he is releasing a mini-album inspired by his childhood heroes and stories, including the title track "You Will Always Walk With Me," featuring collaborations with artists such as Amir Benayoun, Avi Ohayon, and Jimbo J. The lyrics reference fans prioritizing their teams over personal relationships and the historical expulsion of Marmorek residents from Kinneret Farm in 1911.
Despite his new focus on directing and developing other series, Gad assured audiences he will continue acting and singing, believing all his talents complement each other. "The Last Derby - Sha'arayim X Marmorek" will premiere Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on Kan 11.
