Israeli Knesset Passes Basic Law on Torah Study Amid Controversy
The Israeli Knesset approved the Basic Law on Torah Study in its second and third readings, with 63 members voting in favor and 52 against. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was absent from the vote. The original draft of the law required balancing the value of Torah study against other societal values. However, following legal advice from the Knesset's legal counsel warning that the original wording might lead to benefits for Torah students similar to those given to IDF servicemen, the law was amended. The final version establishes Torah study as a fundamental value without mandating it be balanced against other values.
