Rabbi Yigal Monisar Revolutionizes Torah Study with Clear Halachic Method
Rabbi Yigal Monisar, founder of the Melam Institute, reflects on 18 years of quietly transforming the study of Jewish law (Halacha). He began with a personal struggle: despite intense study of Shabbat laws for three years, he lacked clear, organized knowledge that could be retained and applied. Monisar explains that many Torah scholars invest great effort but often lack a systematic approach, causing their knowledge to remain fragmented and unstable. His method focuses on building each topic around a clear case, ruling, and reasoning, integrating sources from the Talmud through the Shulchan Aruch in a continuous, coherent flow. Repetition is central, ensuring that learners internalize and can recall material confidently. This approach has produced hundreds of graduates with rabbinic and judicial certification, many actively engaged in teaching and halachic decision-making.
The institute’s success is exemplified by students from prestigious yeshivot like Ponevezh, who initially doubted the feasibility of mastering complex topics quickly but achieved significant progress through guided, step-by-step study and consistent review. Monisar stresses that the problem is not lack of effort but lack of proper order and method. He asserts that within nine years of correct study, one can master the entire Shulchan Aruch with its commentaries to the level of practical halachic ruling.
Currently, Melam is working on a comprehensive project to publish a clarified, systematic edition of the Tur, Beit Yosef, and Shulchan Aruch, designed to present the foundations of each topic clearly and accessibly. Rabbi Monisar concludes with a call to learners to value their time and choose a path of clarity, order, and true acquisition of Torah knowledge, warning against years lost to ineffective study methods.
