Reality Star Oudiya Pinto Fails to Recognize Former Israeli Leaders in TV Show
Oudiya Pinto, a participant in Channel 13's reality show "Power Couple," sparked controversy after failing to recognize former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in a promo aired before the show's episode on Sunday. The controversy deepened when, during the episode, Pinto and her husband Elior Sofer also failed to identify Yitzhak Navon, Israel's fifth president and a prominent cultural figure, when actress Hani Nahmias mentioned his famous play "Bustan Sfaradi." Pinto mistakenly associated the play with a location near Acre and admitted ignorance about Navon when pressed.
Nahmias expressed disappointment over Pinto's lack of knowledge, calling it a "huge loss," while Pinto denied feeling uneducated but admitted feeling upset. The episode highlighted Pinto's broader unfamiliarity with key figures in Israeli history and culture.
The incident drew criticism from Knesset member Shelly Tal Miron of the Yesh Atid party, who linked Pinto's ignorance to the education system in the Haredi community where Pinto was educated. Miron emphasized the need for a "Basic Law on Civic Studies" to ensure all Israeli students learn about liberal democracy and the country's history, including the political assassination of Rabin in 1995. She called for state oversight of educational content to prevent such gaps in knowledge and to honor Rabin's legacy as a military leader, defense minister, and transformative prime minister.
