Israeli MK Criticizes Education After Reality Star Fails to Recognize Yitzhak Rabin
Odia Pinto, a contestant on the Israeli reality show "Power Couple" aired on Channel 13, sparked controversy after failing to recognize a photo of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin during a quiz segment. When shown Rabin's image, Pinto asked for a hint and later admitted she knew about his assassination but did not know who he was. The episode is set to air on Sunday.
MK Shelly Tal Miron from the Yesh Atid party responded with shock, posting a critical video highlighting this as a failure of the education system, particularly within the Haredi sector where Pinto was educated. Tal Miron called the lack of basic civic knowledge about key figures in Israeli history "a disgrace" and attributed it to neglect and insufficient oversight. She emphasized the need for a constitutional law on civics education to ensure all students learn about liberal democracy and the lessons from Rabin's political assassination in 1995.
During the show, when actor Uri Banai expressed emotional discomfort over Pinto's ignorance, she responded dismissively, escalating the tension. Tal Miron stressed Rabin's significant legacy as a former IDF Chief of Staff, Defense Minister, and Prime Minister who enacted educational reforms. She warned against attempts to equate religious studies exemptions with national service and called for state involvement in educational content to prevent such knowledge gaps.
The incident has ignited a broader debate on the role of education in fostering civic awareness and the state's responsibility to supervise curricula, especially in religious communities.
