Israeli Police Seize 460 Illegal Weapons in Southern Negev Region Amid Crime Crackdown

Since the beginning of this year, Israeli police in the Southern District have confiscated approximately 460 illegal weapons, including military firearms and handguns, primarily within the Bedouin communities. These figures were presented to senior officers in the district, highlighting a significant law enforcement effort against rising crime in the area. Deputy Superintendent Shlomi Derai, the district's crime fighting officer, reported that there have been 18 murder incidents in the Bedouin sector so far this year, with 16 cases successfully solved leading to indictments, a record achievement for the police.

Derai emphasized the zero-tolerance policy directed by Southern District Commander Chief Superintendent Haim Bublil, Police Commissioner Danni Levi, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. He noted that specialized units known as "Yamrim" are actively engaged in these operations. The police are employing advanced technological tools such as drones and helicopters to enhance their enforcement capabilities.

Additionally, ten weapons smuggling gangs operating near the border have been apprehended. Despite challenges including disrupted crime scenes and family interference, police stress the critical importance of the first 24 hours following a murder for effective investigation. Operations have extended into the West Bank, with arrests made to ensure no suspects evade capture. Each police station in the Southern District runs a comprehensive offensive program targeting criminals and arms traffickers, resulting in increased indictments and a decline in vehicle and home break-ins, according to Derai.
