Stuck in Traffic on the Way to Her Husband’s Promotion Ceremony, She Was Rescued on a Motorcycle
On her way to her husband’s rank-award ceremony, Noam Ben Dayan found herself trapped in a huge traffic jam on Route 1 caused by a haredi protest. As time ran out and she was about to miss the important moment, her initial despair gave way to the determination of someone who had served in the army. "I am mission-oriented, I’m a former army woman," she explained about her mindset at the time. "I said, I need to figure out how I’m getting there now."
The solution came from an unexpected direction, when Noam’s father-in-law began signaling to motorcycle riders who were bypassing the jam. One rider, Sharon Shiber, stopped. "I didn’t see her at first, it was her father-in-law who jumped on me like that in the middle of the road," Shiber recalled. When she understood the situation, she did not hesitate for a moment. In a split-second decision, she simply turned to Noam and said the words that began the rescue: "Come on, put on a helmet and get on."
The two set out on a tense, adrenaline-filled ride through the traffic jam, but the biggest challenge was making their way through the chain of protesters blocking the road. Sharon did not give up and used a determined tactic. "I honked and honked, and I said, 'Emergency situation,'" she described. To their surprise, it worked. "They opened their hands and we drove through."
After crossing the human barrier, they raced on the motorcycle along the empty lanes of the Ayalon Highway, and thanks to the unusual ride, Noam arrived at the ceremony just in time to see her husband receive his rank.
The connection between the two did not end when they reached the ceremony. Noam, who felt a strong need to thank Sharon for the extraordinary gesture, posted on Facebook in an effort to find her. The post quickly went viral, and social media buzzed until the two were reunited. "This is the heart of this people, in a way, this is what it looks like. That 'take me, Sharon' thing, that’s it."
