MK Hili Trooper Urges High Expectations for At-Risk Youth at Ezra Conference
At the 20th Ezra Movement conference, MK Hili Trooper, an alumnus of the youth movement, shared insights from his educational experience, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high expectations for all youth, including those facing social and personal challenges. Trooper, who previously managed a school for youth who had dropped out of the education system, spoke to hundreds of movement delegates during a session titled "The New Educational Mission." He highlighted the critical role of educators in providing stability, security, and a sense of belonging to these youths.
Trooper warned against lowering expectations for at-risk youth, describing it as a major danger in education. He stated, "When you lower the bar, you leave them in a low and weak place. Nothing good grows from that place." He shared practical methods for building self-confidence, explaining that educators serve as mirrors for their students: "If they look into my eyes and see that I believe they are strong, they will be strong."
He also candidly recounted his own struggles with math as a student and stressed how to support youth who feel like failures. "A child who tells you 'leave me alone, I'm a zero,' don't believe them. The last thing they want is for you to leave them," he said. Trooper concluded by urging educators to approach their work with humility and respect, viewing education not as a rescue mission but as an equal human encounter where everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
