MK Hili Tropper sharply criticized Shas chairman Aryeh Deri on Wednesday after Deri called on police to avoid using force against protesters from the “Jerusalem Faction” who had blocked traffic on Highway 4 earlier in the day.
Tropper said that a morning report on Galatz revealed that three of Deri’s grandchildren are draft dodgers who are formally defined as deserters. He pointed out that Deri serves in the small cabinet and sits in the room that decides to send fighters into battle, knowing they may not return. According to Tropper, Deri responded by saying he is proud of his grandchildren, despite their status as deserters.
Tropper then escalated his attack, asking how a political leader can support sending “the sons and grandsons of others” to the front while his own sons and grandsons refuse to join the fighting and stay safe at home. He asked, “How does he stand before himself and before his God” while taking part in a forum that decides to endanger others’ lives, even as members of his own family evade military service and avoid the danger.
