Israeli Health Ministry Seizes Dangerous Hair Straightening Products in Nationwide Raid
Following reports of formaldehyde, a carcinogenic substance, being used in hair straightening products branded "EMMA FLEX" at the "Hair Straightening Center" chain, the Israeli Ministry of Health conducted a large-scale inspection on March 27, 2024. The operation targeted nine branches across Netanya, Holon, Tel Aviv, Yehud, Kfar Saba, Petah Tikva, Rehovot, Rishon Lezion, and Ramla. During the inspections, several products were found to be improperly labeled or completely unlabeled, including items marked only in foreign languages and others with unknown origin, manufacturer, importer, or composition. These products were confiscated and removed from the salons.
Samples of the seized products were taken for laboratory testing to verify their composition and compliance with legal standards. The Ministry expressed serious concern over the lack of proper labeling, which prevents verification of product safety, legal marketing status, and potential hazardous ingredients. Using such unverified or improperly labeled products poses significant health risks to consumers due to unknown concentrations of harmful substances.
The Ministry of Health warned the public against purchasing hair straightening products from unauthorized or unrecognized sources and stressed the importance of following manufacturer instructions and ensuring products are legally marketed and properly labeled. The Ministry is continuing its investigation in cooperation with local authorities and enforcement agencies and will take all necessary measures to protect public health.
The Ministry also issued recommendations for consumers to only undergo hair straightening treatments at licensed salons using legally marketed products with verifiable origins. It advised checking the Ministry’s cosmetic product database to confirm product legality and label accuracy. Additionally, it urged individuals experiencing symptoms such as reduced or no urine output, facial or limb swelling, nausea, extreme fatigue, abdominal or back pain, shortness of breath, confusion, or any health deterioration after hair straightening to seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers about the treatment and product used.
