Former Romanian Footballer Gabriel Mureșan Dies at 44 After Drowning
Gabriel Mureșan, a former Romanian footballer and mayor of Apold commune, tragically drowned at the age of 44. The incident occurred in a lake near Apold, where Mureșan served as mayor. Emergency medical teams attempted resuscitation but were unable to save him.
Mureșan was a defensive midfielder who played professionally from 1999 to 2017, mostly in the Romanian league, with one season in Russia at Tom Tomsk. He notably won three Romanian league titles (2008, 2010, 2012) and three cups with CFR Cluj. Between 2007 and 2011, he earned nine caps for the Romanian national team and participated in UEFA Champions League matches.
After retiring from football in 2017, Mureșan entered public service and was elected mayor of Apold, his hometown. He was re-elected in 2025 with approximately 88% of the vote. The Apold municipality expressed deep sorrow over his death, praising his dedication to the community. UEFA also issued condolences to his family.
