UN Declares Genocide in Sudan Amid Brutal Darfur Massacres and Mass Rapes
The United Nations has officially declared that the atrocities committed by rebel forces in Sudan's Darfur region constitute genocide. According to a UN investigative committee, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese rebel group, have carried out widespread massacres, mass rapes, and deliberate starvation of the local population as part of a targeted campaign. These acts occurred during the ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has lasted since 2023.
The RSF seized control of the city of El Fasher in northern Darfur after a brutal year-long siege. Survivors reported being raped in rooms still containing the bodies of recently murdered civilians, including family members. The UN report also highlights war crimes such as prolonged sieges, blocking humanitarian aid, and shelling food production facilities. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that a similar humanitarian disaster is unfolding around the city of El Obeid, with documented cases of extrajudicial killings, kidnappings, torture, and sexual violence.
The RSF has denied all allegations, accusing their enemies of fabricating evidence and committing similar abuses. The civil war between the RSF and the Sudanese army has resulted in severe humanitarian consequences: 34 million Sudanese currently require aid, approximately 4 million have been displaced since 2023, and estimates of the death toll range from 60,000 to several hundred thousand.
The UN's findings underscore the urgent need for international attention and intervention to prevent further atrocities and alleviate the suffering of millions caught in Sudan's protracted conflict.
