UN Declares Genocide in Sudan Amid Brutal Darfur Massacres and Mass Rape
The United Nations has officially declared that the atrocities committed by Sudanese rebel forces in Darfur amount to genocide. According to a UN investigative committee, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel militia, have carried out widespread massacres, mass rapes, and deliberate starvation against the local population in the city of El Fasher in northern Darfur. These acts are part of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has lasted since 2023 and involves fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese army.
The RSF seized El Fasher after a brutal year-long siege, during which they imposed a blockade that cut off humanitarian aid and bombed food production facilities, constituting war crimes. Survivors reported being raped in rooms still containing the bodies of recently murdered civilians, including family members. The UN Human Rights Commissioner also warned that a similar humanitarian disaster is unfolding around the city of El Obeid, where extrajudicial killings, kidnappings, torture, and sexual violence have been documented.
The RSF has denied all allegations of abuse, accusing their enemies of fabricating evidence and committing similar crimes themselves. The civil war has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis, with approximately 34 million Sudanese currently requiring aid, around 4 million displaced since 2023, and death toll estimates ranging from 60,000 to several hundred thousand. The UN committee emphasized that the documented siege, attacks on civilian infrastructure, and widespread violations against civilians in El Fasher should serve as a grave warning to the international community.
