Texas Mother Sentenced to 25 Years for Leaving Toddler in Hot Car
Vanessa Escibal, a 28-year-old mother from Texas, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder for leaving her 15-month-old son in a hot car. The incident occurred on August 16 of the previous year in Frisco, about 40 kilometers north of Dallas. On that day, temperatures reached approximately 35 degrees Celsius, and the car’s air conditioning was not functioning properly. Despite knowing this, Escibal left her son inside the vehicle for over two hours while she worked at a Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa branch.
Initially, Escibal told police she had not gone to work that day and had driven with her son because the car’s air conditioning was broken. However, police later confirmed with her employer that she had worked a shift from 13:45 to 16:15. After finishing work, she took the child to Medical City Plano hospital but stopped at a McDonald’s on the way. Upon arrival, doctors were unable to save the toddler, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.
About a day after the incident, Escibal admitted in a recorded phone call with a coworker that she felt trapped because she could not find childcare. She acknowledged responsibility and anticipated her arrest following the child’s death. Prosecutor Ashley Waddle emphasized that young children should never be left alone in vehicles, especially during summer in Texas, and noted the jury sent a clear message of accountability with the verdict.
