Flight Instructor Jumps From Plane Mid-Air, Student Safely Lands Cessna in Argentina
A dramatic incident unfolded in the skies over Argentina when a 42-year-old flight instructor, Leandro Andres Bertazo, unexpectedly jumped from a Cessna 150 during a training flight, leaving his 22-year-old student, Rosario, alone in the air. Mid-flight, Bertazo removed his headset, unbuckled his seatbelt, told the shocked student "you know what you have to do, keep going," then opened the plane door and jumped to his death.
Despite her young age and lack of experience, Rosario managed to regain composure and safely land the aircraft on the runway without damage. Eduardo Alvarez, director of the flight school where Bertazo worked, stated there were no prior signs indicating the instructor's intentions. Earlier that day, Bertazo had completed another uneventful flight lesson with a different student.
Alvarez described the tragic decision as unfathomable and highlighted the difficulty of opening a plane door mid-flight, comparing it to trying to open a car door traveling at 200 kilometers per hour. The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led Bertazo to jump from the plane and abandon his student in such a perilous situation.
