Flight Student Safely Lands Plane After Instructor Jumps to Death Mid-Flight in Argentina
In a rare and tragic incident over the town of Toledo in central Argentina, a 42-year-old experienced flight instructor, Leandro Andres Bertazo, jumped to his death during a routine training flight, leaving his 22-year-old student, Rosario, alone in the cockpit. The event occurred last Saturday while flying a Cessna 150. According to reports, Bertazo instructed Rosario to continue flying the plane on her own, then removed his headset and seatbelt, opened the aircraft door mid-flight, and jumped out, resulting in a fatal free fall.
Eduardo Alvarez, director of the Parrots Cordoba flight school where Bertazo worked, expressed shock and disbelief over the incident. He described Bertazo as a well-liked and cheerful individual who showed no prior signs of distress or suicidal intentions. Bertazo was a seasoned instructor with previous experience at a flight school in neighboring Chile and had conducted another flight earlier that day without incident.
Alvarez highlighted the difficulty in comprehending Bertazo’s motives, noting the complexity of the human mind and the tragic nature of making such a decision with a student onboard. He also emphasized the technical challenge of opening a light aircraft door during flight, comparing it to opening a car door at 200 km/h.
Argentine authorities have launched an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the instructor’s suicide and the risks posed to the student. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing all details leading to the extreme act. Meanwhile, the flight school staff and families are grappling with the tragedy, and the young student is receiving psychological support following the traumatic event.
