Israel Seeks to Block US Sale of F-35 Jets to Turkey Amid Security Concerns

Israeli officials are actively working to prevent or limit the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets from the United States to Turkey. The issue was discussed during a recent meeting of Israel's Security Cabinet, where it was emphasized that the deal is not yet finalized and could still be canceled. Jerusalem is engaging with the US administration to either stop the sale or ensure Turkey receives a downgraded version of the aircraft.

The pressure from Israel intensified after former US President Donald Trump indicated he might support the sale, raising concerns in Jerusalem. Israeli sources believe the US could impose stringent conditions on Turkey, particularly regarding allegations that Turkish territory is used for financial activities linked to Hamas and Hezbollah. These conditions might include shutting down bank accounts, apps, and money transfer routes used by terrorist organizations.

Senior Israeli officials maintain that Israel's air superiority will be preserved regardless, but they aim to minimize risks associated with the deal. One official described Trump's approach as "quantum diplomacy," balancing close ties with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan despite their adversarial relationship. Netanyahu is expected to raise the matter directly with Trump in an upcoming meeting next week.
