Israel Worried Trump May Sell F-35 Jets to Turkey, Citing Risks to Air Force Freedom of Action
Israeli military officials said Thursday night they are concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled he may sell F-35 stealth fighters to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A senior officer told Channel 13 that such a move “could significantly endanger the freedom of action of the Air Force.”
Trump also revealed that Erdogan had once considered joining the fighting on the Iranian side, adding to Israeli unease as relations between Turkey and Israel continue to deteriorate. The report did not say whether any sale is imminent, only that the possibility is now causing concern inside the IDF.
At the same time, uncertainty remains over Israel’s war aims in Lebanon. The prime minister and defense minister have said the IDF will continue to remain on Lebanese territory, but the chief of staff has not made a formal commitment to that effect. A senior security official said in private conversations that there is, for now, no intention to withdraw from the area.
Separately, the commander of U.S. Central Command met today with Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir to coordinate joint steps against Hezbollah and Iran.
