Israeli Police Chief Affirms Full Compliance with Supreme Court Decisions Amid Political Tensions
At a traffic department conference on Wednesday, Israel Police Commissioner Dany Levi addressed the issue of police compliance with the Supreme Court (Bagatz) rulings. Responding to recent controversy sparked by police spokesperson Aryeh Doron, who declined to specify which authority the police would obey in case of a conflict between the government and the court, Levi clarified, "We represent the law and obey it. Every Supreme Court decision is one we will implement without hesitation." He emphasized the police's apolitical stance, stating, "It does not matter what someone's political opinion is. We are an apolitical organization and keep our views private."
Levi's remarks came a day after Doron's interview on Kan Reshet Bet, where he avoided a direct answer about police conduct in a potential clash between branches of government, saying only, "We will obey whoever the law requires us to obey."
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yariv Levin criticized the possibility of holding a repeat vote for the State Comptroller position following a Supreme Court ruling. The court found a significant flaw in the election process of Michael Regev due to breaches of ballot secrecy and ordered the Knesset to clarify its next steps. Although the judges mandated new elections, coalition leaders, including Levin, opposed this, with Levin asserting on Kol Barama radio that "there can be no hesitation. There cannot be repeat elections for the State Comptroller. Attorney Michael Regev should simply assume his role."
