Hundreds of Gazans in Israel Voluntarily Surrender to IDF to Return to Gaza Strip

Israeli security forces have observed a surprising trend in recent weeks: hundreds of Gaza residents who have been in Israel and the West Bank since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, are voluntarily surrendering themselves to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at checkpoints. These individuals, who legally entered Israel before the conflict for work or medical treatment, have remained in Israeli and West Bank territories throughout the prolonged fighting without returning home. According to a report by Doron Kedush on Galei Tzahal, over 200 Gazans have surrendered themselves to security forces in recent weeks alone.

This phenomenon is accelerating, with a notably large group of 46 Gazans surrendering at once at a checkpoint in the West Bank just this week. All those who surrender are transferred by the IDF, in coordination with security officials, directly back to the Gaza Strip. Israeli security analysts attribute this wave of voluntary surrenders primarily to the cessation of economic and social support from Palestinian communities in the West Bank. Over the past two years of the war, these Gazans had received local protection, temporary jobs, and financial aid, but this support has recently stopped, leaving them without means of livelihood.

Consequently, many prefer to risk returning to their homes in Gaza. However, security officials stress that this is likely only the tip of the iceberg. Estimates suggest that hundreds to thousands of Gazans remain in Israel and the West Bank under similar circumstances, though exact numbers are unknown. Early in the war, Israeli forces made efforts to locate and deport Gazan workers remaining in Israel, conducting several mass deportation waves. These proactive measures have long ceased, and the current situation mainly involves those who choose to surrender voluntarily.
