Justice Minister Urges Defiance of Supreme Court Ruling on State Comptroller Election
Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin called on Wednesday to defy the Supreme Court's ruling that the Knesset must hold repeat elections for the State Comptroller position. Levin stated unequivocally that there should be no repeat elections and that Attorney Reuven Rivlin should simply assume the role. His comments came in an interview with the ultra-Orthodox radio station Kol Barama, six days after the court mandated the rerun but without setting a deadline for compliance.
Despite the ruling, the Knesset has yet to announce when the repeat elections will take place. Reports from ynet revealed that Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are consulting on whether to comply with the court's decision, with some in the coalition advocating against holding the repeat vote. The Justice Minister's remarks reflect ongoing political resistance within the government to implementing the Supreme Court's directive.
