Chilean Man Survives After Being Swallowed and Spit Out by Sperm Whale in Magellan Strait
Adrian Simencas, a Chilean kayaker, experienced a rare and harrowing encounter when a sperm whale swallowed him and his kayak for several seconds in the Magellan Strait, Patagonia. The incident occurred while Adrian was kayaking alongside his father, Del Simencas, who captured the dramatic moment on camera. The video shows the whale suddenly emerging from the water, engulfing Adrian and his kayak, then releasing them shortly after without causing harm.
Adrian recounted his fear of dying during the event but was relieved once freed. He then worried about his father's safety and the risk of hypothermia in the frigid waters. Fortunately, both men managed to return safely to shore. The Magellan Strait is a well-known tourist destination in southern Chile, popular for water sports and adventure activities, though its cold waters pose significant risks.
Experts note that whale attacks on humans are extremely rare and suggest the whale likely swallowed Adrian by mistake while surfacing to feed, releasing him upon realizing he was not prey.
