Curiosity and Openness Key Traits Among Centenarians in Italy's Blue Zone
A new study published in the International Journal of Applied Positive Psychology highlights personality traits as significant factors in successful aging, beyond diet and exercise. Conducted in Sardinia, Italy, a renowned Blue Zone with a high concentration of centenarians, researchers examined 125 participants aged 71 to 101, including 55 from the Blue Zone and 70 from a nearby area with similar social and economic conditions. The study found that many Blue Zone residents exhibited high levels of openness to new experiences, characterized by curiosity, a love of learning, and willingness to try new things even in old age.
In addition to openness, these individuals demonstrated better stress management, advanced emotional skills, and dedicated more time to hobbies and activities that challenge the mind and body. Analysis of all participants revealed that higher openness correlated with better mental well-being and greater engagement in hobbies, while higher conscientiousness was linked to greater life satisfaction and resilience. Conversely, higher neuroticism was associated with poorer health and quality of life.
The researchers caution that personality traits alone do not extend lifespan but suggest that curious and open individuals tend to adopt healthier lifestyles, remain socially and physically active, and seek new experiences throughout life. This observational study, though limited by sample size, supports growing evidence that psychological factors like curiosity, optimism, and a sense of meaning contribute to healthy aging alongside nutrition, exercise, and social connections.
