Haifa’s New Sulṭ Serves Elevated Arabic-Style Fish and Chips
A new fish-focused eatery named Sulṭ has opened in Haifa’s downtown area, quickly gaining popularity despite long queues. Created by chef Alaa Mousa, a prominent figure in the modern Arabic culinary scene, Sulṭ offers a fresh take on street food, diverging from his previous ventures Lux and Crudo, which blend Italian cuisine with local Arabic influences. Located on Derech Ha’Atzmaut, Sulṭ replaces Mousa’s former Kanafeh de Lux with a menu centered on high-end street food inspired by British fish and chips but executed with distinct Arabic flavors.
The signature dish features crispy fried fillet of sea bream coated in a thick schnitzel-style batter, served with lemon-zested fries, grilled green beans, and sides of preserved lemon aioli and excellent tzatziki. Another highlight is the fish arais, a grilled pita stuffed with fresh mullet from the Sea of Galilee, accompanied by caper and coriander aioli sauces that complement the dish. Additional offerings include a generous portion of crispy anchovies and a classic Lebanese dessert, Layali Beirut, priced affordably at 22 shekels.
Sulṭ is recommended for visitors from across Israel, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beersheba, especially those residing in Haifa and northern regions. The restaurant emphasizes quality street food without the formality or high prices often associated with gourmet dining. Diners should expect a casual experience with potential wait times due to the venue’s popularity. Prices range from 22 shekels for beer and dessert to 92 shekels for the crispy fish dish.
Sulṭ’s address is 33 Derech Ha’Atzmaut, Haifa. The restaurant’s success underscores a growing trend of elevated street food that combines local ingredients and culinary traditions with international concepts.
