Tottenham Signs Sandro Tonali From Newcastle in Record £100 Million Deal
Tottenham Hotspur officially completed the signing of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United on July 6, 2026. The 26-year-old joined the North London club on a six-year contract in a deal reportedly worth up to £100 million ($133 million), making it the most expensive transfer in Tottenham's history. This surpasses the previous club record of £65 million paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. The transfer fee includes an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in potential bonuses tied to Champions League qualifications.
Tonali becomes the second player in days to break Tottenham's transfer record, following the arrival of Matheus Fernandes from West Ham United for around £85 million ($112 million). His signing marks Tottenham's sixth acquisition this summer amid a busy transfer window, which also saw free transfers of Andy Robertson, Martin Dúbravka, and Marcos Senesi, as well as Jan Paul van Hecke joining from Brighton for £52 million.
Last season, Tonali played 35 Premier League games for Newcastle and was a key figure in their midfield, although the team finished 12th. Tottenham, coming off a second consecutive 17th-place finish in the Premier League, hopes Tonali will help improve their fortunes. Tonali previously faced a significant suspension due to a gambling scandal but has since returned to form and reestablished himself as a top European midfielder.
