Undercover Officer Dismantles Protection Racket in Southern Israel
An undercover police officer operated for about a year disguised as a business owner in the Beersheba industrial area, successfully exposing a protection racket involving dozens of criminals. The officer was recruited by the Central Unit of the Negev District Police and targeted known offenders from the Bedouin community who had been extorting local businesses with threats and demands for regular "protection" payments totaling tens of thousands of shekels.
Throughout the operation, the undercover officer and investigators gathered substantial evidence against key suspects, including prominent crime figures in the southern district. The investigation revealed that the criminal network systematically exploited the vulnerability and fear of local business owners, using intimidation and property damage to enforce their control over industrial zones.
In the early hours of Monday, a large-scale arrest operation was launched as the case moved into the open investigation phase. Units from the Border Police, Negev District detectives, the aerial unit, and special forces simultaneously raided the homes of suspects across the Bedouin communities, southern towns, and other parts of the country. Dozens of suspects were caught by surprise and taken immediately for sensitive interrogations at the Central Unit's offices.
