Al-Qaeda-Linked Rebels Launch Major Attacks on Military Bases Across Mali
Rebel groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda have launched a series of coordinated attacks on military bases throughout Mali, from the northern to southern regions, marking one of the largest waves of assaults in recent months. The terrorist organization Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin claimed to have seized control of at least seven military and pro-government positions. Reports indicate that the rebels also shot down a helicopter belonging to a pro-Russian force operating in the area, with footage circulating online showing the rebels celebrating the helicopter's downing.
The Malian army stated it repelled the attacks and maintains full control of the situation. According to the military, 26 militants were killed during the clashes, while one government-aligned fighter was killed and four others wounded. These attacks come amid a continuing deterioration of security in Mali, despite promises from the military regime, which took power about five years ago, to restore stability.
Russia, whose "Africa Corps" forces assist the Malian army, has pledged to continue supporting the government following the recent attacks. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Mali's security landscape and the persistent threat posed by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda in the Sahel region.
