Hundreds Rally at Knotan Junction Conference to Support Torah Scholars Against Military Draft
The historic "From the Upheaval" conference was held this week at the luxurious Yehuda Events Hall in Knotan Junction, organized by the 'Notnim Gev' group. The event marked the organization's two-year anniversary since its founding under the guidance of Rabbi Asher HaKohen Deutsch, zt"l, and gathered hundreds of members of the faithful Jewish community, including yeshiva heads, rabbis, and Torah leaders. The conference focused on preparations for an emergency fundraising campaign aimed at securing massive budgets to expand religious activities in response to the military draft decree.
The highlight of the event was the entrance of Rabbi Azriel Auerbach, a leading Torah authority, who was warmly welcomed with singing and dancing. Rabbi Auerbach delivered a passionate speech urging the public to support the organization's activists who dedicate themselves to this sacred cause. A special letter written to support the fundraising was also read aloud.
Further speeches included Rabbi Shlomo Gutsagenda, son-in-law of Rabbi Deutsch, who testified to his father-in-law's dedication to establishing the organization, and Rabbi Aharon Heimlich, chairman of the 'Achim Anachnu' organization, which has supported the campaign since its inception. Rabbi Yisrael Aryeh Mushkat, a representative of the organization's leadership, detailed the extensive behind-the-scenes work, including identifying yeshiva students summoned for conscription, providing professional guidance, supporting families, and offering moral and material aid to Torah prisoners during and after their military detention.
A powerful presentation exposed the recruitment authorities' conspiracies, accompanied by rare historical footage from 2010 of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, zt"l, who firmly stated that "when the fence is breached, one must do whatever is possible." The atmosphere grew emotional when a young Torah prisoner shared his heartfelt testimony about the organization's close support. The audience responded with fervent dancing and carried him on their shoulders to stirring battle songs.
The event concluded with a remarkable scene as hundreds of attending scholars committed to substantial donations, surpassing 4 million shekels, to fund the ongoing struggle. This significant financial pledge underscores the community's resolve to resist the draft and support Torah study under increasing pressure.
