Jar Trap with Apple Cider Vinegar Outperforms Homemade Fruit Fly Solutions in Kitchen Test

During the Israeli summer, ripe fruits left on kitchen counters quickly attract persistent fruit flies, also known as drosophila. To identify the most effective homemade trap, a food editor from The Kitchn tested four popular DIY methods side by side in her kitchen over several days. Each trap was placed near ripe bananas and watermelon pieces on a windowsill on Monday morning and evaluated on Friday afternoon.

Three traps used the same bait: about a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with a few drops of dish soap. This mixture attracts fruit flies with its sweet and sour scent, while the soap breaks the liquid's surface tension, causing the flies to sink and drown. The fourth trap used leftover wine with dish soap.

The simplest method, leaving an open wine bottle with soap, caught only four or five flies and was considered inconvenient and unattractive for kitchen use. A jar with a paper cone funnel was cumbersome to assemble and caught very few flies. Another jar covered with plastic wrap pierced with holes was easy to prepare but trapped only eight to ten flies, possibly due to large holes or blocked scent.

The most effective trap was a glass jar with a metal lid punctured with tiny holes using a nail and hammer, containing the vinegar-soap bait. Despite initial doubts about hole size, the jar trapped at least 50 fruit flies by the weekend. Its screw-on lid minimized spills, making it practical and clean, though the visible dead flies inside might be unappealing.

The conclusion is clear: for kitchens overwhelmed by fruit flies during hot months, the best homemade trap is a pierced-lid jar with apple cider vinegar and dish soap. Other methods may be less effective or more troublesome to prepare, so this trap offers a simple and efficient solution to the common summer nuisance.
