Home Remedy Using Lemon, Cinnamon, and Rosemary Repels Flies in Summer Kitchens
As summer brings open windows and rapidly ripening fruits, flies often invade kitchens, finding their way through even the smallest openings. Lucy Kalice, a cleaning enthusiast, shared a simple, natural method to make homes less attractive to flies using three common kitchen ingredients: lemon, cinnamon, and rosemary. In a TikTok video, she explained that her home was overrun with flies, prompting her to create a fragrant mixture that takes about five minutes to prepare. The mixture is simmered on low heat to spread the scent throughout the kitchen.
Kalice noted that flies dislike strong smells, and the combination of citrus, spices, and herbs disrupts their sensory receptors, encouraging them to leave. The recipe involves filling a small pot halfway with water, adding lemon slices, two cinnamon sticks, and several rosemary sprigs, then heating until it simmers gently. She advises keeping the pot on low heat for an extended period to diffuse the aroma but warns to never leave it unattended or without water.
Beyond the simmer pot, once cooled, the mixture can be strained and transferred to a spray bottle for use around entry points like window sills and door frames, areas where flies commonly enter. Kalice recommends testing the spray on hidden surfaces first to avoid damage, as lemon and cinnamon can stain delicate materials. She also suggests alternatives like orange slices or lavender to vary the scent.
The article explains why these ingredients work: lemon contains limonene, a strong citrus compound; cinnamon has aromatic oils like cinnamaldehyde; and rosemary emits camphor and cineole, all creating a scent pleasant to humans but repellent to flies. However, Kalice emphasizes that maintaining cleanliness is crucial, as flies are attracted to food residues, overripe fruit, pet food, and unemptied trash. Proper window and door screens remain the most effective barrier, with the aromatic mixture serving as an additional, natural deterrent that also freshens the kitchen environment.
