Arab Community Protests Violence After Deadly Week in Northern Israel
On January 22, 2026, activists from the political party Makom Lekulanu blocked the Coastal Highway near Haifa, protesting the police's handling of a recent surge in violence within the Arab community. The demonstration followed a week in which 12 people were killed in violent incidents across Arab society. Protesters demand that the government and police implement an emergency plan to combat crime and murders, accusing authorities of ongoing neglect.
Sally Abd, a Haifa city council member and Makom Lekulanu Knesset candidate, criticized the current government for cutting budgets allocated to violence prevention programs. She accused the police minister of inciting against Arab citizens instead of ensuring their personal security, stating, "In the upcoming elections, we will replace him and the entire government."
The protest coincided with a fatal shooting near a convenience store on Haifa's Haganah Boulevard, where 18-year-old Arab Christian Jonathan Houri was killed and two others were critically injured. Police have launched a criminal investigation and are conducting searches for suspects. Meanwhile, a situation assessment meeting is underway at the Haifa district police headquarters to address the escalating violence.
The demonstrations and recent events highlight growing frustration in the Arab community over security and law enforcement responses amid a deadly crime wave.
