Israel Basketball Team Faces Crucial July Matches Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

The Israeli national basketball team is set to begin its July game window with two critical matches as it aims to maintain its chances of qualifying for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup, known as the "Mundobasket." The team will face strong opponents Latvia and reigning European champion Germany, with the first game scheduled for Friday in Riga, Latvia.

Coach Ariel Beit Halachmi has finalized the roster for these matches, notably excluding forward Lior Carrera. Although Israel has already secured advancement to the second group stage thanks to two wins over Cyprus in February, the results in this window are crucial. Poor performance now could jeopardize Israel's chances of progressing further in the tournament.

The second group stage, starting at the end of August, will be highly competitive, with Israel expected to face teams from Poland, Latvia, Austria, and the Netherlands. Every point earned in the current window is therefore vital.

Germany enters the window with a strong record of three wins and one loss but fields a relatively young and short roster, missing key player Luis Olinde. Their star player is Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Dennis Schröder, who averaged 10.9 points and 4.9 assists in the NBA this season. Schröder will lead teammates Jonas Mattisseck and Malte Delow in their effort to secure an away victory in Latvia.
