Israel Faces Tough Road to Qualify for 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar
The Israeli national basketball team, coached by Ariel Beit Halachmi, has advanced to the decisive group stage of the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers but carries a challenging record of only two wins against four losses. Drawn into Group K, Israel will face Poland, Latvia, and the Netherlands, aiming to finish among the top three to secure a historic spot in the World Cup in Qatar next summer.
The second round of qualifiers begins at the end of August, with Israel needing to overcome a significant points gap behind group leaders Germany and Croatia, who both hold five wins. Israel’s recent heavy 103-75 defeat to Croatia, following a loss to Germany, highlighted the team’s vulnerabilities, especially under the basket, exacerbated by injuries to key players Roman Sorkin and Tomer Ginat.
Despite the loss, guard Yam Madar led the team with 21 points, though his efforts were insufficient to counter Croatia’s dominance. Naturalized player Kadeem Carrington had a quiet game with only six points, and Israel’s defense struggled against Croatia’s stars. The team now faces a critical break to regroup and hopes to have a healthier roster by August.
To qualify, Israel must secure crucial wins against the Netherlands and Latvia and attempt an upset over Poland, while Germany and Croatia are expected to maintain their stronghold on the group. The full schedule for the second stage includes home and away games against these teams from August 2026 through February 2027.
The Israeli basketball federation and fans remain cautiously optimistic but acknowledge that only a sporting miracle will keep their World Cup dreams alive at this stage.
