Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Hits Kyiv, Killing 18 and Wounding Dozens
A severe and unusual overnight attack struck Kyiv, Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least 18 people and injuring over 90. The Russian military launched hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles targeting the Ukrainian capital, causing widespread destruction including the partial collapse of a nine-story residential building. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia fired 74 missiles and 496 drones, with air defenses intercepting most but not all of the incoming projectiles. The strikes hit 33 locations, primarily residential buildings, an ambulance station, a scientific institute, and a hotel.
President Volodymyr Zelensky cut short a visit to Dublin to warn citizens of the impending assault. He confirmed that the attack also affected other regions including Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Cherkasy, with fatalities in Kharkiv and Kyiv regions as well. Zelensky emphasized the critical need for enhanced air defense systems to protect Ukraine. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, declared a day of mourning following the deadliest attack on the city since the start of the year. Thousands sought shelter in emergency bunkers and subway stations during the bombardment.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted only military facilities, energy infrastructure, and airports, framing the operation as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure, including a refinery in Nizhny Novgorod where one person died. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that President Vladimir Putin was briefed and vowed continued military pressure on Ukraine, blaming the European Union for escalating tensions and discussing potential national security measures.
In response, Germany condemned the civilian casualties and accused Putin of lacking willingness to negotiate. EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas announced plans to propose additional sanctions against Russia for targeting civilians. Concurrently, the EU approved a 3.9 billion euro aid package to Ukraine for purchasing drones, following Hungary's removal of its veto. This support comes amid significant damage inflicted by Ukrainian drones on Russia's oil industry, causing severe fuel shortages and forcing Russia to import gasoline from India by sea to alleviate the crisis.
