Tori Spelling Reflects on Friendship and Loss of Shannen Doherty and Her Father
Tori Spelling recently opened up about her emotional struggles following the deaths of her close friend and former co-star Shannen Doherty and her father, Aaron Spelling, the legendary producer behind "Beverly Hills 90210." Spelling and Doherty were close friends before starring together on the iconic 1990s series, but behind-the-scenes conflicts led to Doherty's dismissal from the show in 1994, a decision Spelling supported.
Doherty passed away two years ago at age 53 after a prolonged battle with cancer. In a podcast interview with Michael Rosenbaum, Spelling revealed that her grief over Doherty's death was far more intense than when her father died in 2006 at age 83. She attributed this to her younger age at the time of her father's passing and the emotional repression she experienced then. Spelling described her father as her hero and said she thinks of him daily.
Reflecting on Doherty's death, Spelling said growing older made her confront mortality more directly, realizing that friends her age could die, which was very difficult. She also recalled the 2019 death of Luke Perry, another main cast member, and how she initially tried to stay strong by suppressing her emotions. Only after Doherty's death did she allow herself to openly grieve.
Spelling also spoke about the estrangement and eventual reconciliation with Doherty, crediting fan conventions for helping them rebuild their friendship before Doherty's passing. She attended a memorial service last year, describing it as beautiful and a meaningful moment to reconnect with Doherty's family and friends. The anniversary of Doherty's death will be marked on July 13.
Spelling's reflections highlight the complex personal and professional dynamics behind the beloved series and the lasting impact of losing close friends and family.
