“Israel is hurting their national security”: Middle East expert Dr. Edi Cohen analyzes the roots of Erdogan’s fear, from the strikes in Syria to the regional alliances that are squeezing Ankara, and explains, if the regime in Iran falls, Turkey will lose its standing. • Watch the interview
Middle East expert Dr. Edi Cohen said today (Thursday) in an interview with Tal Meir that behind Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s sharp statements against the country lies a growing sense of threat in Ankara in light of Israel’s regional rise.
“Israel is indeed hurting the Turks’ national security,” Cohen began, surprisingly, and explained, “We bombed the bases they tried to establish in Syria several times. Some say Turks were killed and entire bases, at least two, were bombed.” Cohen clarified that he is not defending Ankara’s position, but believes it is important to understand how it is perceived on the Turkish side: “I am not defending Erdogan, I am only giving the Israeli viewer the Turkish perspective, why he said that sentence.”
According to him, in recent years Israel has established a series of regional alliances that worry Turkey. “The Turks feel that Israel is growing too much. Israel has formed an alliance with Greece and Cyprus, Israel has formed an alliance with Somaliland. The Turks feel that Israel is growing too much, and that hurts them.”
Later, Cohen gave a dramatic assessment of the day after the Iranian regime: “If the regime in Iran really falls, it’s over for Turkey. Turkey will become marginal. Israel will form an alliance with the new regime in Iran, and the Turks and the Arabs will lose the whole campaign.”
