During the week, the Southern Criminal Prosecution Unit filed an indictment with the Beersheba Magistrate’s Court against a 19-year-old resident of the Abu Krinat tribe, on a range of charges including dangerous driving without a driver’s license and insurance, as well as obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duties.
According to police, during a proactive enforcement operation by Yoav Unit fighters in the Southern District on Highway 25, while riding a police motorcycle, a unit fighter signaled a vehicle driver to stop for inspection. The driver did not obey the officer’s instructions and began fleeing the scene while driving recklessly and dangerously.
During the attempt to escape, the suspect drove on the shoulder and overtook vehicles, all while crossing a double solid lane marking and intersections against a red light, endangering other drivers, and causing cars on the road to swerve from their lanes and brake.
While riding the motorcycle, the fighter pursued the suspect, who during the chase turned toward the Bedouin diaspora area, and at that stage lost control of the vehicle and hit a traffic island, then stopped, not before acting aggressively toward the officer. The suspect was later transferred to Dimona police station for further treatment and questioning.
As noted, many counts are included in the indictment against the young man, among them reckless driving, driving without a driver’s license, driving without insurance, driving while crossing a solid line, driving through a red light, obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duties, and overtaking across a solid line.
"Anyone who chooses to drive without a license, ignore police instructions and commit serious traffic offenses while endangering road users will encounter determined and uncompromising action by our forces," said Yoav Unit Commander, Chief Superintendent Yuri Muzubovsky. "The fight against criminal drivers who endanger the lives of the public is a central mission for us, and we will continue to act with all the tools at our disposal to preserve public safety and remove dangerous drivers from the road."
