Israeli Security Chief Urged to Address Mansour Abbas' Alleged Hamas Ties at Urgent Knesset Hearing
Tzvika Fogel, chairman of the Knesset National Security Committee, has formally requested that Shin Bet chief David Zini send a senior representative to an urgent committee meeting scheduled for July 6, 2026. The meeting aims to address suspicions regarding Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra'am party, and his alleged connections with senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad figures. This follows a previous committee session where no Shin Bet representatives appeared, prompting Fogel to escalate the matter.
The controversy arose after a Channel 14 investigation by the "Choosing Life" forum documented Abbas attending a conference in Turkey alongside top Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials. Fogel subsequently filed a police complaint accusing Abbas of maintaining contact with a foreign agent and terrorist organizations. In his letter to Zini, Fogel emphasized that the meetings were not merely political but involved efforts to promote reconciliation and joint political and security opposition against Israel and its allies.
Fogel highlighted the seriousness of Abbas denying involvement despite video evidence and stressed that protecting democratic institutions from subversion and terrorism falls squarely within Shin Bet's mandate. He urged Zini to provide answers at the upcoming hearing or delegate a senior official. The committee's focus reflects heightened concern over potential security threats linked to Abbas' activities and the broader implications for Israeli national security.
