Michael Jackson Biopic Breaks Box Office Records as Highest-Grossing Biography Film

The biographical film "Michael," based on the life of Michael Jackson, has become the highest-grossing biography movie in history, earning $977 million worldwide. It surpassed Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which held the record with $975 million, and also overtook the Queen biopic, which grossed $911 million globally. Released in April, "Michael" has generated $607.2 million internationally and $370.2 million in North America, with a record-breaking $217 million opening weekend for a musical biopic.

The film stars Jackson's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his first cinematic role, and chronicles Michael Jackson's journey from his days with the Jackson 5 to becoming the "King of Pop," featuring reenactments of many iconic performances and music videos. Despite its commercial success, the film has sparked controversy for omitting any mention of the longstanding sexual abuse allegations against Jackson. Jackson denied all accusations during his lifetime and was acquitted in a 2005 trial. Posthumous allegations, notably highlighted in the documentary "Leaving Neverland," were also excluded by the filmmakers.

Thanks to its box office success, "Michael" has become Lionsgate's highest-grossing film, surpassing "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Reports indicate that the studio is considering producing at least one more film about Jackson's life.
