Michael Jackson Biopic Breaks Box Office Records as Highest-Grossing Biography Film
The biographical film "Michael," based on the life of Michael Jackson, has set a new record as the highest-grossing biography movie in history, earning $977 million worldwide. It surpassed Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which held the previous record with $975 million in global revenue. The film also became the highest-grossing musical biopic ever, overtaking the Queen band biopic that earned $911 million globally.
Released in April, "Michael" has generated $607.2 million outside the United States and $370.2 million in North America. Its opening weekend brought in $217 million worldwide, marking a record for a musical biopic. Jackson is portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his first film role. The movie traces Jackson's journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his rise as the "King of Pop," recreating many of his iconic performances and music videos.
Despite its commercial success, the film has sparked controversy for omitting any mention of the longstanding sexual abuse allegations against Jackson. While Jackson denied all accusations during his lifetime and was acquitted in a 2005 trial, further claims emerged after his death, notably in the documentary "Leaving Neverland." The filmmakers chose not to address these allegations in the movie.
Thanks to its box office performance, "Michael" also became Lionsgate studio's highest-grossing film, surpassing "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." Reports indicate that Lionsgate is considering producing at least one more film about Jackson's life.
