Dedi Simchi Supports Broad Government Formation to Avoid Prolonged Opposition
Retired Brigadier General Dedi Simchi discussed the emerging political alliance with Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz in a 103fm interview. Simchi emphasized that the union aims to heal national divisions and promote broad conscription across all sectors of Israeli society. He stated, "We intend to build this properly and well," referring to the anticipated merger with Gantz's party.
Simchi highlighted that all political actors have learned the lesson that spending four years in opposition is unwise, advocating instead for joining a broad government to minimize damage. He said, "Being four years in the ice desert? That's not smart." He also stressed that his faction will not concede the crucial 61-seat parliamentary threshold to either Benjamin Netanyahu or the coalition of Naftali Bennett and Benny Gantz’s former ally Gadi Eisenkot.
Regarding the contentious conscription law, Simchi asserted that everyone should serve in the military, noting a shift within the Haredi community toward enlistment. "The train has left the station," he said, signaling ongoing social changes.
Last week, reports indicated advanced talks between Gantz, Simchi, and former Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel to run jointly in upcoming elections. The proposed leadership would be shared between Gantz and Simchi, with their names appearing first on the ballot. Each side is expected to receive five Knesset list spots, with Gantz first, Simchi second, and Hendel third. However, significant disagreements remain, particularly over the future coalition's composition. Hendel insists on excluding parties reliant on Haredi or Arab factions from government formation.
Simchi concluded by affirming their commitment to reflect the public's will and maximize voter representation in the new alliance.
