Israeli National Service Volunteer Surprises Children with Custom Crochet Dolls from Their Drawings
Mika Koren, a 20-year-old national service volunteer from Kochav Yair, has created a unique end-of-year gift for the children she mentors in grades one through three. Instead of the usual drawings being stored away or discarded, Koren crocheted personalized dolls based on each child's artwork, producing around 25 dolls in total. She has been crocheting for about three years but only recently decided to transform children's drawings into dolls, inspired by social media trends she saw on TikTok.
Starting in late April, Koren asked the children to color and decorate animal drawings without revealing her plan to turn them into crochet dolls. The children were thrilled when she presented the handmade dolls at the school year's end, and they also admired each other's creations, showing mutual appreciation. Koren finds crocheting therapeutic and enjoys the creative possibilities it offers, preferring dolls over larger projects like clothing or blankets due to their variety and manageable size.
Before this project, Koren made custom dolls for personal occasions such as births, birthdays, and engagements, including a baby Bamba doll and a pair of rabbits as a wedding gift. After sharing her work on TikTok and Instagram, she received many orders and messages, which she is gradually fulfilling. Prices for the dolls range from 100 to 500 shekels, depending on size and complexity, with creation times from 30 minutes to over an hour.
Koren encourages beginners not to give up despite initial difficulties, emphasizing that persistence leads to improvement. She plans to launch a website soon, developed by her partner, to expand her business. Her project highlights a creative and heartfelt way to celebrate children's art and bring joy through personalized handmade gifts.
