Real Madrid Considers Coaching Change, Holds Talks With Dimitris Itoudis
Real Madrid is debating whether to retain veteran coach Sergio Scariolo after a trophyless season or to replace him for the upcoming campaign. Initially, the return of Juan Carlos Sánchez as head of the basketball department seemed to secure Scariolo's position, as Sánchez was the one who appointed the Italian coach. However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Sánchez no longer rules out the possibility of firing Scariolo despite the high severance costs, since Scariolo still has two years left on his contract.
The leading candidate to replace Scariolo is Dimitris Itoudis, whose name has recently been linked to Real Madrid in Spain. Preliminary talks between the club and Itoudis have reportedly already taken place. Itoudis currently coaches Hapoel Tel Aviv, and its owner Ofer Yanai recently stated on 103FM that Itoudis is expected to remain with the team next season.
Another contender mentioned by Encestando is Paco Redondo, who served as an assistant to Pablo Laso and Chus Mateo for ten years and maintains a strong relationship with Sánchez. Regarding player roster considerations, Marca reported that two top candidates for recruitment are Timothy Luwawu-Cabarrot, also targeted by Maccabi Tel Aviv, and former Maccabi player David DiJulious, who had an impressive season with Murcia.
