Real Madrid Fires Sergio Scariolo, Plans to Appoint Pedro Martinez as New Coach
Real Madrid officially announced the dismissal of Italian coach Sergio Scariolo after just one season with the club. The decision follows a trophyless year marked by several key defeats, including a loss to Olympiacos in the EuroLeague final, elimination by Tenerife in the Spanish League playoff quarterfinals, a Spanish Cup final loss to Baskonia, and a Supercup defeat to Valencia. Despite the termination, Scariolo will receive a substantial severance package of 5 million euros for the remaining two years on his contract.
The club is moving towards appointing Pedro Martinez as Scariolo's successor. Martinez had an outstanding season with Valencia, leading them to a Spanish League championship, a Supercup victory, and a EuroLeague Final Four appearance. Although Real Madrid has not yet officially confirmed Martinez's signing, they are expected to pay a 1 million euro buyout fee to Valencia and offer Martinez a three-year contract worth just over 1 million euros per season.
This coaching change is considered one of the most notable in the EuroLeague this summer, as Real Madrid seeks to return to winning ways after a disappointing campaign under Scariolo.
