Vandalism Wave Hits Washington National Mall, Trump Condemns Damage to Reflecting Pool
Authorities in Washington, D.C. are investigating a series of vandalism incidents at the National Mall, including damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, anti-Trump graffiti, and a blood-written message on the Washington Monument. The National Mall, a central avenue lined with major museums, national memorials, and government buildings, has seen a significant rise in such acts this summer.
Katie Martin, communications director for the Department of the Interior, stated that what was initially thought to be an isolated event has turned into a troubling trend targeting the Reflecting Pool. The pool's surface was slashed over 90 meters with razor blades, and metal fences were uprooted and thrown into the water. So far, five individuals have been arrested, five others cited, and 14 investigations are ongoing.
Former President Donald Trump condemned the vandalism, describing the damage as "terrible" and noting that newly installed lawns in the area were also harmed. He added that repairs have been completed but expressed regret over the incidents. The vandalism wave has raised concerns about security and preservation of national landmarks in the capital.
