Woman Arrested for Vandalizing U.S. World War II Memorial in Washington
A woman identified as Melissa L. Paris was arrested on suspicion of vandalizing the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, when she was reportedly caught spraying a mysterious message on the monument's walls and pouring soap into one of its fountains, causing large amounts of foam to overflow. Paris faces two federal charges: damaging U.S. government property and defacing a memorial dedicated to veterans, each carrying a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.
The vandalism included red and green paint splattered on the granite structure and a red inscription reading "Clean hands dirty $" beneath the Atlantic Arch. While the colors and message might evoke the Palestinian flag and suggest criticism related to U.S. spending, authorities have not confirmed any pro-Palestinian motive or direct reference to Israel. A 21-year-old student visiting the site interpreted the graffiti as a protest against federal spending priorities, possibly including military aid to Israel or the Trump Arch construction.
The incident drew strong condemnation from U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, who called it a grave insult to the American World War II heroes. The Department of the Interior and the National Park Police launched an investigation, and cleanup efforts began the same day. The National World War II Memorial, dedicated in 2004 and recently renovated at a cost of about $4 million, honors approximately 400,000 American war dead and 16 million veterans. Veterans groups and memorial supporters described the act as a disgraceful affront to those who served and sacrificed.
Federal prosecutors emphasized the sanctity of the memorial, with U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jenin Pirro stating the attack was an "odious assault" on a sacred site commemorating Americans who fought and died for freedom, including her own family members.
