President Donald Trump sparked a public backlash over the weekend after posting a series of angry statements about damage to the refurbished reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The project, part of a major overhaul of the National Mall, cost about $14.8 million and was completed only recently. Trump said on Truth Social that the pool was an extraordinary engineering and aesthetic achievement and that it had not looked or functioned this way since the 1920s.
He said the redesigned pool used a special lining that creates a mirror effect reflecting the Lincoln Memorial and the historic surroundings, unlike the leak problems that plagued the original structure. Trump also claimed the site was deliberately sabotaged shortly after opening. According to him, “chemical materials” damaged the inner coating, and a long cut was made in the outer structure, harming what he described as the memory of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
At the same time, algae quickly changed the water from dark green to a cloudy, unappealing color, turning the pool into a target for ridicule online. Political critics and public figures mocked the large expenditure, arguing that a project meant to signal luxury and careful maintenance had quickly become an example of environmental and logistical failure. Some journalists also questioned how someone who owns hotels and luxury properties could not keep a single pool clean.
Federal park authorities and the U.S. Park Police increased security in the area and began examining the incident. Investigators are also reviewing a mysterious marking found nearby, “86 47,” which has prompted differing interpretations and is being checked as part of the inquiry, including possible threats against senior political leaders. Cleanup crews are using oxidizing agents and advanced filtration systems to stop the algae spread, and officials say much of the contamination has already been addressed, though full restoration will take more time.
